Adult Survivor's Pension cover
The basic pension from the Final Salary Scheme includes a pension for your spouse or civil partner when you die unless you have chosen not to pay for this cover. If you are single when you die, this pension may be payable, at the discretion of the Trustees, to a Surviving Dependant whom the Trustees consider to meet the criteria of a Pensionable Dependant (this could be a common-law spouse, partner, or someone who is financially dependent on you to a substantial extent). Detailed information and Surviving Dependant Registration forms are available on the Forms page.
What does it cost?
The contributions towards this cover are 1.5% of your Pensionable pay.
Am I paying for Adult Survivor’s Pension cover?
If you are a male active member of
NAPS,
you will always have paid for the Adult Survivor’s pension cover unless you have provided your written instructions to opt out of the cover.
If you are a female active member of NAPS, the ability to pay towards Adult Survivor’s Pension cover was introduced from 1 December 1987 (a further opportunity to start paying towards the cover was offered in April 1990).
How do I start paying for Adult Survivor’s Pension cover?
If you are not currently paying for this cover and wish to start, you need to write to us, giving at least one calendar month’s notice. Your ability to opt into the cover will be subject to the Trustees receiving a satisfactory medical report from the Scheme's independent medical advisers (a form will be sent to you on receipt of your written request to opt in).
I want to stop paying for Adult Survivor’s Pension cover
You can stop paying the higher contributions towards the cover by writing to us, giving at least one calendar month’s notice. Once you have stopped, you can only opt into the cover on one more occasion – so if you have previously opted out, restarted and then stop paying again, you will not be able to restart contributions towards this cover.
Can I backdate Adult Survivor’s Pension cover?
You can only opt into, or out of, the cover from a future date. If you opt in, cover will start from the 1st of the month after we receive a satisfactory medical report from the Scheme’s independent medical advisers. If you opt out, we cannot refund any contributions you have already made.
